Synopsis

Make no mistake, research can be fun!
This book about research challenges you to think critically about the social sciences. Plus, through examples and anecdotes, it invites you to reflect on the research methods used in it.

The topics we cover in it include:
• What perspectives are there on scientific inquiry?
• Why is the current understanding of the social sciences changing so significantly?
• How should a study be evaluated today, now that perspectives on science are changing?
• What is the right way to write a research proposal?
• How should a practical issue be analysed?
• How should one apply data collection techniques, such as questionnaires, interviews, and observation?
• What is the right way to draw both non-random and random samples?
• How do you set about analysing the data you have collected in a survey?

This book discusses vital questions. For example: what are the strengths and weaknesses of the “old” way of doing research, which focuses primarily on building theories? Conversely, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the emerging “new” way of doing research, which aims to find solutions for practical issues? And what is the value of insights that are yielded by statistics, such as “parents” level of education affects a child’s school performance? When we pose basic questions like these, we are talking about the “hidden secrets of science”. These are vital everyday questions that often don’t get addressed enough in academia because researchers would rather not invite “too much” questioning of their research results.

This book is a must for anyone who wants to learn how to:
• think critically about research;
• set up and conduct research themselves;
• assess the results of research.
